These late 19th-century French Rococo Revival curtain tie backs, dating from around 1880, consist of a matching pair made from ormolu, gilt bronze, and brass. Each piece has a gold colour finish with little wear to the gilding, allowing the surface to glimmer and catch the light. The decoration includes sweeping acanthus leaves and C-scrolls, with fine foliate moulding and a bulrush and foliage design cast on both the front arm and the back plate that attaches to the wall. The backplates display manufacturer number 107 and maker initials SM stamps. Each tie back measures 19 cm high, 7 cm wide, and 14 cm deep. In a modern interior, this pair serves as functional window hardware, designed to hold back heavy drapes in a bay window or principal living space. The wall-mounted hooks secure fabric elegantly while displaying decorative French chateau style details. The construction accommodates everyday domestic use while maintaining period character from the late nineteenth century.

French ormolu curtain tie backs are decorative wall-mounted metal fixtures produced during the nineteenth century to hold window drapes open, characterised by their gilded bronze finish and ornate classical motifs.

These fixtures were typically cast in bronze or brass using lost-wax or sand-casting techniques, then gilded using mercury amalgam processes or electroplating to achieve a durable gold lustre.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-chased surface detailing, crisp casting relief on the face, unpolished back surfaces with visible casting marks, and natural oxidation around high-contact areas.

They can be mounted beside modern window frames to anchor heavy linen or velvet curtains, adding historical texture and architectural interest to contemporary or traditional rooms.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth or dry natural bristle brush, avoiding harsh chemical polishes or water that can permanently damage the historic gilded surface.
