Bottle coasters and decanter stands gained popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries to protect polished dining tables from condensation rings and spills during and after meals.

Maker workshops typically combined metals such as brass, silver, or plated copper with dense hardwoods like mahogany, walnut, or oak, often incorporating felt or baize bases.

Authenticity is determined by examining construction methods, tool marks, patination on the metalwork, and the type of wood or inner lining appropriate to the stated century.

These pieces function well on a sideboard or coffee table to corral small objects, or utilized in their traditional capacity to hold bottles and decanters during dining events.

Maintain the materials by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding harsh chemical polishes that can strip the natural ageing and historic patination from the metal and timber.
