This nineteenth-century nest of four tables displays a black lacquer finish with hand-painted Chinoiserie decoration in gold and red, depicting detailed dragon motifs across the tops and sides. Each table stands on shaped lyre legs that terminate in gilded claw feet, joined by curved stretchers for stability. The timber shows minor historic knocks, marks, wear, imperfections and repairs consistent with careful antique condition, while the joints remain solid. Designed for a gentleman's library or positioned at the end of a sofa, this graduated set provides versatile surface space within a living area or study. The tables stack neatly inside one another to save space when not in use, with the largest table measuring 54 cm wide, 30 cm deep and 69 cm high.

FAQs

Chinoiserie refers to a European decorative style originating in the seventeenth century that imitation and interpretation of Chinese and East Asian artistic traditions, characterized by lacquered finishes, gilded motifs, and stylized natural scenes.

Pieces were typically constructed from softwoods or hardwoods coated with multiple layers of resin-based lacquer, then detailed with hand-applied gold leaf, metallic pigments, and paints.

Authentic period examples display natural crazing or micro-crackling in the lacquer surface, hand-drawn detailing with slight irregularities, traditional joinery, and proportionate wear to the base and feet.

Position the nested set beside an armchair or sofa as flexible accent tables, pulled out individually when entertaining or kept stacked to present a single patterned surface.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, keep the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, and avoid moisture or chemical solvents.
