19th Century French Nest of 4 Floral Painted Tables, C1880

19th century
Description

Decorative Late 19th-Century French Nest of Four Occasional Tables

A charming and decorative late 19th-century nest of four French occasional tables of lovely quality, dating from circa 1880–1900 and originating from the south of France. Each of the four interlocking tables features a finely hand painted rectangular top, depicting exotic birds of paradise scenes on a rich burgundy ground. The tops are raised on elegant faux bamboo gilt legs, united by stretchers and set on trestle bases, giving the set both delicacy and strength.

In excellent, strong and completely original condition, these tables retain a beautiful warm colour and patination that greatly enhance their decorative appeal. The combination of hand painted decoration and gilt faux bamboo bases makes this an especially attractive and desirable set.

Equally practical and decorative, this wonderful nest of four occasional tables would sit happily in a drawing room, sitting room or study, and adds an unmistakable touch of French 19th-century charm to any interior.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nesting tables gained widespread popularity in 19th-century France during the Napoleon III era, heavily influenced by Japonisme and Chinoiserie aesthetics. Craftsmen created sets of graduated tables decorated with hand-painted botanical motifs and faux bamboo turnings to meet the demand for exotic, space-saving occasional furniture.

These pieces were typically constructed from lightweight hardwoods, softwoods, or papier-mache, finished with multiple layers of lacquer or paint. Decorative elements often incorporated gilded detail, turned faux bamboo legs, and hand-painted polychrome enamels.

Authentic period examples display signs of hand-craftsmanship, such as hand-cut joinery beneath the aprons, fine craquelure in the paint layer, and subtle age-related wear to the gilding along high-touch areas like the turned legs.

A nest of tables can be used grouped beside a sofa as layered end tables, or separated throughout a living space to serve as flexible drink stands during entertaining. Their compact footprint makes them ideal for smaller rooms requiring versatile surface space.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid using commercial liquid polishes, solvents, or excess moisture, and keep the item away from direct sunlight and harsh heat sources to prevent cracking or fading of the painted finish.
