A Pembroke table is a form of small table characterised by two hinged flaps on either side, which can be raised to increase surface area or lowered when space is limited. Developed in the 18th century during the Georgian era, these versatile pieces were frequently used as writing tables, breakfast tables, or occasional tables in parlours and libraries.

Authentic Georgian Pembroke tables were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or occasionally satinwood and oak, often featuring fine veneers and stringing. Traditional joinery techniques, such as dovetailing in the drawer construction and hand-cut tenons, were standard, complemented by solid brass hardware and castors.

Authentication relies on examining the timber grain, construction joints, and hardware. Look for hand-cut dovetails in the drawer lining, timber shrinkage consistent with age, period-appropriate brass handles, and hand-turned or tapered legs rather than modern machine-tooled fittings.

This table works effectively as a compact writing desk or a side table in a living room, where its drop-leaf mechanism offers flexibility. Pairing it with modern seating creates an interesting contrast, allowing the rich tones of the wood and brass details to anchor the space.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the wood from drying out and cracking. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally apply a quality beeswax polish to nourish the timber and preserve its natural lustre.
