How do you clean early glazed pottery?

Wash the pieces by hand in warm soapy water. A soft cloth shifts dust and surface dirt without scratching the glaze. Avoid soaking porous wares. If water seeps through the unglazed base or crazing lines, the underlying clay can swell and cause the glaze to flake.

I inherited a large collection of brown glazed dairy bowls from my grandmother's farm, so what are the best ways to display them safely?

Group them on sturdy wooden shelves. These vessels are heavy, so ensure any wall-mounted racking has reinforced brackets bolted directly into the masonry. Keep them away from high traffic areas. Stacking them on the floor risks damage from sweeping brushes and passing feet. If you must stack them, place a circle of felt between each bowl to protect the interior glaze.

Can you still bake in them?

Most dealers advise against using antique earthenware for cooking. Two centuries of thermal shock leave microscopic weaknesses. Placing an early dish in a modern oven risks cracking it.

Why do some of the large storage jars have handles on the sides while others just have a simple straight rim with no grips?

It usually comes down to the intended use. Handled jars were designed to be lifted frequently, often carrying liquids or heavy dry goods across the kitchen. Plain jars tended to sit undisturbed on pantry shelves. The straight rim allowed a cloth or parchment cover to be tied tightly over the top with string to keep out pests. Regional habits also played a part. Some local potteries added lug handles as standard, while others rarely bothered with the extra step.
