This pair of Victorian seated spaniel figurines dates from 1880 in the English Country House style. Constructed from ceramic earthenware with a glossy glaze finish, the figures display a white body patterned with rich russet coat patches, alongside hand-applied gilded collars, padlocks and chains. The press-moulded bodies show upright canine forms with pointed ears and attentive expressions. Each piece measures 23 cm high, 14 cm wide, and 9.5 cm deep. Suitable for display in a traditional domestic interior, these ornaments work effectively placed upon a mantelpiece, sideboard, or bookshelf to add character to a living room, study, or hallway. Their compact dimensions allow them to sit neatly amongst books or decorative accessories while introducing a touch of nineteenth-century decorative arts to the space.

Popularised during the Victorian period in 19th-century Britain, Staffordshire dog figurines were produced in volume by potteries in Staffordshire as accessible decorative ornaments for middle-class homes. Designed to face one another, they were predominantly displayed in pairs on fireplace mantels above coal fires.

These ceramic figures were press-moulded from earthenware slip into hollow forms before firing. Once fired, artisans applied white tin-glazes or lead glazes, followed by hand-painted overglaze enamel decoration and gilded highlights for collars, lockets, and chains.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature visible vertical mould seams, a small air-release hole on the back or underside, natural paint variation from hand application, and mild crazing to the glaze. Originals often exhibit wear to the delicate overglaze gilt chains and paintwork.

These classic ceramic figures function as striking sculptural accents when placed symmetrically on a chimneypiece, styled alongside books on a bookcase shelf, or arranged on a console table in an entryway to introduce traditional English character.

Clean these figures gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove accumulated dust. Avoid soaking the earthenware in water or applying abrasive chemical cleaners, as water can enter internal cavities and harsh detergents will erode vintage gilding and overglaze paint.
