Tin-glazed fayence is a form of earthenware coated with an opaque white glaze containing tin oxide. Popular throughout 18th-century Europe, it allowed potters to paint intricate coloured oxide decorations onto a pale surface mimicking Chinese porcelain.

These figures were sculpted from earthenware clay, fired once, and then dipped in a lead-tin glaze mixture. Metallic oxides, such as manganese for purple-brown hues and copper for greens, were applied before a final firing.

Authentic pieces usually display minor glaze chipping, unglazed base rims revealing reddish or buff clay, and subtle variations from hand-painted oxide brushwork rather than modern transfer printing.

Display the object on a mantlepiece, within a glazed bookcase, or on a console table alongside structured books and glass objects to contrast historical texture with clean modern lines.

Dust gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid immersing the ceramic in water or using abrasive chemical cleaners, as moisture can enter existing glaze cracks and cause deterioration.
