Scagliola is a composite material made from selenite, glue, and natural pigments, mixed to imitate marble and other hard stones. Developed in Italy during the 17th century, it became widely used in European architecture and decorative arts for creating ornate architectural elements.

Traditional scagliola is crafted using a mixture of purified gypsum, animal glue, and pigments, applied over a core typically made of wood or stucco. The surface is meticulously hand-polished with oils and waxes to achieve a deep, convincing stone-like finish.

Authentic antique scagliola is characterised by its cold-to-the-touch dense surface, lack of repeating natural stone fissures, and the presence of hand-applied pigment patterns beneath a polished wax or varnish layer. Microscopic inspection often reveals the composite gypsum base rather than quarried stone.

These pieces work effectively as structural focal points to elevate sculptural objects, urns, or floral arrangements, adding architectural weight and historical contrast to minimalist modern spaces.

Scagliola is sensitive to moisture and alcohol, which can damage the polished surface. Dust gently with a dry microfibre cloth and periodically maintain the finish with specialised microcrystalline wax, avoiding water or chemical cleaning agents.
