Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century Chinese Qing dynasty altar table is made from elm with a red lacquered finish and brass hardware. The piece displays a long rectangular top above three front drawers, each detailed with fine carved relief panels and traditional brass central hardware. Openwork spandrels decorate the corners beneath the table top, while straight legs support the structure. The rich red timber finish highlights visible grain patterns alongside carved motifs on both sides and inverted hoof feet. Measuring 92 cm high, 176 cm wide, and 67 cm deep, the table provides generous surface space. In a contemporary home, this altar table works well placed beside the front door as a striking console surface for keys and decorative objects, or positioned against a hallway wall to greet visitors. The substantial proportions and intricate traditional carving create an immediate focal point in an entryway or living space, bringing warmth and character to traditional or maximalist interiors.

FAQs

Traditionally used in Chinese homes and temples, altar tables held family shrines, incense burners, and ceremonial offerings during ancestral worship rituals.

These tables were constructed from solid timber such as elm, pine, or cedar, and finished with natural lacquer tree sap, frequently decorated with brass hardware.

Authentic pieces feature mortise-and-tenon joinery without nails, natural surface wear on carved areas, and fine crazing across aged lacquer finishes.

Positioned as a console table in an entry hallway or behind a sofa, it provides strong colour contrast and texture against contemporary neutral decor.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft dry microfibre cloth, avoid direct exposure to sunlight or heat sources, and refrain from using harsh abrasive cleaners.
