Description

An 18th century Chinese blue and white lidded tureen c1780, with stylised figural mask handles to the bowl and a stem type handle to the lid. It is beautifully decorated in underglaze blue with a landscape scene of pagodas, trees, and figures on a bridge.

I have seen the animal head handles on this style of tureen referred to as rabbits, pigs and dragons - I’m not sure what they are meant to be so I’ll leave that up to you!

Condition: The tureen has a firing crack to the bowl, but no other damage or repair. The glaze is a little hazy in places on the bowl.

Free UK delivery - if you would like a quote for delivery elsewhere please get in touch.

Date of Manufacture

Antique and Unique has dated this Blue and White Tureen to the 18th Century.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Chinese export porcelain was produced in China specifically for the European and American markets from the 16th to the 19th centuries, combining traditional Chinese ceramic techniques with Western shapes and design preferences.

These pieces were typically made from high-fired petuntse and kaolin clay, glazed with clear or slightly bluish-tinted glaze, and hand-painted using cobalt oxide pigment before undergoing a high-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hand-painted brushwork with slight irregularities, natural glaze pooling, footrims showing unglazed body paste with historic wear, and specific cobalt blue tones characteristic of 18th-century kilns.

An antique tureen can be displayed as a focal point on a sideboard, atop a stack of art books on a coffee table, or integrated into an open shelving arrangement to introduce historical texture and pattern.

Antique ceramics should be hand-washed gently in lukewarm water using mild soap when necessary, avoiding harsh detergents, dishwashers, and abrasive materials, and kept away from direct, prolonged sunlight to protect the glaze.
