A cheese coaster, sometimes called a cheese wagon, is a wheeled or stationary wooden trough used in 18th and 19th-century dining rooms to serve cheese around the table without scratching the surface.

They were predominantly crafted from dense, high-quality hardwoods like solid mahogany, frequently featuring turned wooden handles and occasionally small brass or ivory castors on the base.

Authentic items exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, genuine patina and wear consistent with age, and the deep, rich colouration typical of early untreated hardwoods.

It can be placed on a dining table as a functional centrepiece or displayed on a sideboard as a sculptural decorative object holding books or letters.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and periodically treat the surface with a neutral microcrystalline wax to nourish the grain.
