Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1860s:
Scrolled knees on the tripod base: mid-Victorian cabriole shaping.
Carved gadrooned collar on the column: mid-nineteenth-century turning work.
Darker patina settled into the carved recesses: many years of waxing.
Serpentine moulded edge on the figured mahogany top: standard Victorian parlour styling.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian lamp table is formed from figured mahogany displaying a rich brown timber tone with a warm polish. The piece features an oval top finished with a scalloped edge and moulded detail, supported by a central turned and carved pedestal column. Three carved scrolled legs extend downward to form a tripod base. Visible details include the natural wood grain patterns across the top and the carved motifs on the central column and feet. Measuring 61 cm high, 58.5 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, the table fits neatly beside an armchair or at the end of a sofa in a living room or study. It provides a stable surface for holding a reading lamp, drinks, or small decorative accessories while adding traditional character to an interior setting.

FAQs

Victorian pedestal side tables typically feature a turned central column supported by three splayed or scrolled legs, often made from solid or veneered dark hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilised mahogany, walnut, and rosewood, applying hand-cut veneers for figured tabletop surfaces and hand-turning the central columns and legs.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces exhibit original jointing methods under the top, age-appropriate oxidation on timber undersides, hand-turned elements, and natural wear patterns on the feet.

Place the table alongside a tailored armchair or sofa to hold modern table lamps or decorative ceramics, pairing dark timber with modern fabrics to create visual contrast.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish periodically, keeping the table away from direct heat sources and radiator units to prevent timber movement.
