This nineteenth-century Russian Orthodox religious art object is a hand-painted icon of Saint Nicholas, housed behind an engraved brass oklad with a radiant halo, a Cyrillic inscription at the bottom, and a depiction of a gospel book. The piece combines warm brown tempera paint visible on the painted facial features and hands with a polished yellow metal finish. Noticeable details include verdigris oxidation spots on the lower left of the metal plate, intricate geometric engraving across the entire surface, and an arched top framing the halo. Measuring 18 cm high, 14 cm wide, and 2.8 cm deep, the compact format is suited for display on a bookshelf, a desk, or a mantelpiece within a study or living area.

An oklad, also known as a riza, is a decorative metal cover designed to protect Russian Orthodox religious panel paintings from candle soot, grease, and handling. Originating in medieval Eastern Europe, these metal casings evolved into detailed artistic items featuring elaborate chasing, repousse, and decorative engraving.

The core image was typically painted onto a seasoned wooden panel using egg tempera pigments. The protective metal covers were created from brass, copper, silver, or silver-gilt, shaped through chasing and embossing techniques to fit the painted panel underneath.

Authentic pieces feature painted facial features and hands rendered on wood underneath tailored apertures in the metal casing. Search for traditional Cyrillic inscriptions along the lower border, hand-chased geometric patterns, and genuine surface oxidisation on the metal.

Icons can be placed within dark wood bookcases, incorporated into curated gallery walls, or displayed on a mantlepiece against neutral backdrops. Positioning subtle spot lighting nearby highlights the metallic relief work and contrast of the painted elements.

Avoid abrasive chemical polishes and liquid cleansers, which can strip historical surface patina and seep into the painted wood underneath. Maintain the piece by dusting lightly with a soft, dry natural-bristle brush in a low-humidity environment.
