Antique English Georgian Regency Figured Mahogany Rectangular Tilt Top Breakfast / Dining Table (Circa 1820)

19th century
Description

This is a fine quality antique English Georgian Regency dining table, with a stunning figured mahogany tilt-top, of rectangular shape, to seat six people, circa 1820, in excellent original condition. Also known as a “breakfast table”, the table boasts a top-quality solid two-piece top, displaying a stunning figured grain pattern. The Regency dining table retains its original brass locking latch, which allows the tabletop to be tilted vertically for storage and to show off the lovely grain configuration on the top, or removed for easy transportation. The dining table incorporates solid brass thumbscrews either side of the hinges, which secure the table top to the pedestal. Removing these brass screws detaches the table-top from the pedestal base. The Georgian breakfast table is raised on a central ring turned pedestal column, which terminates on four sturdy splayed legs. The legs rest on the original solid brass decorative castor toes & castors. The Regency dining table can comfortably accommodate six people and is sufficiently tall enough to comfortably fit your knees underneath. It is also sufficiently wide enough to accommodate serving dishes in the centre of the table.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in late 18th and early 19th-century Britain, a tilt-top breakfast table features a top mounted on a hinge mechanism that allows it to swing vertically when not in use, providing space-saving functionality in formal dining rooms.

These tables were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, featuring hand-dovetailed catch blocks, central pedestal support columns, and brass castors attached to splayed pedestal legs.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut brass latch mechanisms, original square-cut steel or iron screws, flame mahogany veneers, and splayed legs fitted with brass toe caps and castors.

Position the table against a wall with the top tilted upward to display the figured wood grain as an architectural element, or set it centrally in a dining space surrounded by contemporary chairs for visual contrast.

Clean regularly using a soft microfibre cloth, apply beeswax polish sparingly along the grain once or twice a year, and keep the piece away from direct heat sources or damp environments to preserve the original finish.
