This Black Forest double inkwell originates from the period around 1890 and takes the form of two carved birds perched upon an ear of corn with an integrated pen tray base. The piece is rendered in dark brown carved wood with a warm patina, displaying meticulous feather detailing and naturalistic maize cob motifs across the husk and kernels. Additional visual elements include the realistic posture of the winged birds and the undulating contours of the corn leaves that form the tray below. Measuring 12 cm high by 30 cm wide and 11 cm deep, the object sits suitably upon a gentleman's library or office desk, serving as a functional accessory for writing and an ornamental focal point within a study.

Despite the name referencing Germany, Black Forest woodcarvings predominantly originated in the Brienz region of Switzerland during the nineteenth century. Artisans created realistic flora, fauna, and rustic figurative scenes, which were widely sold to international travellers as souvenir desk items and decorative objects.

These inkstands were carved primarily from native Swiss woods such as linden (lime), walnut, and pearwood. The carved timber housing usually held glass or porcelain ink reservoirs, often accessible via hinged carved lids.

Authentic pieces feature crisp, hand-chiselled detailing with dimensional depth and visible tool marks under inspection. Original patination shows natural age-related wear, and figures display expressive anatomical accuracy rather than uniform machine moulding.

Place the inkstand on a dark wood executive desk or a styled study bookcase alongside leather-bound books and brass accessories. It also functions as a central decorative accent on a hallway console or sideboard.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry brush to clear recessed crevices without abrading the finish. Apply high-grade natural beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, and position the item away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent warping.
