A Very Rare Wind Vane Dial in the Manner of Whitehurst

18th century
Description

A George III period carved mahogany wind vane dial. The silvered engraved dial with all the points of a compass housed in the finely carved mahogany frame, the design of which matches the Whitehurst of derby barometers and would have been made on suite to match.

Sir Nicholas Goodison noted on the one recently sold from his own collection at Christie's [£10,710], that his and a hydrometer in the Gurstenfeld collection are the only known examples of this design, until this one!

Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.
