This unusual Victorian book stand dates from circa 1870 and follows a Gothic Revival style in warm brass. The frame takes the form of twin Gothic arches, decorated with a twisted rope trim around the borders, ball finials at the upper corners, and a raised page bar supported by twisted wirework at the base. Inside the arches, figural relief sculptures depict a gentleman leaning against a stone pillar on the left and a lady standing on the right, accompanied by foliate detailing. The structure includes three ball feet for support when closed, an adjustable rake mechanism, and an impressed number 2 marked in three places. A visible twist runs along the ledge holding the book. Measuring 21 cm high, 29.5 cm wide, and 21.5 cm deep, the stand functions on an office desk or library table to hold open books, cookbooks, or manuscripts while reading or displaying texts. It serves both practical and decorative purposes in a traditional study, home office, or reading room.

FAQs

Popular during the mid to late nineteenth century, these pieces feature architectural archways, figurative relief carvings, and intricate metalwork inspired by medieval and Renaissance design elements.

These items were typically constructed from solid cast brass, featuring hand-detailed elements, heavy base plates, and integrated rear prop arms or hinges for stability.

Authentic period examples display natural patination in recessed areas, sharp casting details, hand-finished edges, and period-appropriate joining hardware such as original rivets or screws.

A brass book stand can be placed on an office desk, displayed on a library sideboard supporting an art volume, or used on a kitchen island to hold a recipe book.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and avoid abrasive chemical polishes to preserve the aged surface patination and original lacquer.
