Description

Large 19th Century Imari Charger.

The charger with a slightly dished profile. The outer body with reserves of inward facing birds, alternating with reserves of scrolling flowers, against a background of tree and flower filled landscapes. The centre of the charger decorated with a crane, perching within the hanging branches of a tree. The rear with leaf decoration, and a recessed foot rim.

Imari porcelain is a type of Japanese export porcelain produced in the town of Arita, in the Hizen province, starting in the early Edo period. It became immensely popular in Europe during the late 17th and 18th centuries.

Authentic Imari pieces are crafted from high-fired hard-paste porcelain, traditionally characterised by a palette of underglaze cobalt blue, iron red, and added highlights of gilt and other enamel colours.

Identification involves examining the weight, the presence of kiln spurs on the base, the vibrancy of the hand-painted iron red and cobalt blue pigments, and the wear patterns consistent with age on the glaze.
