Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1860s:
Turned baluster twin-column end supports: typical of mid-Victorian parlour tables.
Carved acanthus knees and scroll toes: hand-carved detailing of the period.
Turned central stretcher with central knop: standard mid-19th-century trestle construction.
Richly figured walnut top: mellowed colour and natural surface patination.

FAQs

A Victorian centre table is a piece of nineteenth-century furniture designed to be placed in the middle of a room rather than against a wall. Popular during the Victorian era, these tables served as focal points in parlours and drawing rooms for display, reading, and tea.

Cabinetmakers typically crafted these tables from solid hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, often featuring figured veneer tops. The construction frequently incorporates turned uprights, hand-carved cabriole or scroll legs, and traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery.

Genuine period examples display hand-cut joinery marks beneath the frame, natural age patination, and subtle surface wear on the timber. Additionally, original brass castors and hand-carved architectural details with minor irregularities indicate authentic nineteenth-century craftsmanship.

A Victorian centre table can be positioned in a spacious foyer, window bay, or central living space to create a structural anchor point. Pairing the dark timber with modern sculptural objects, ceramic vessels, or art monographs balances historical detailing with contemporary design.

Maintain the wood by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year along the grain. Keep the table away from direct heat sources, radiators, and strong sunlight to prevent veneer movement and finish deterioration.
