FAQs

Petit-point is a fine form of needlepoint executed on canvas using single-thread tent stitch, which allows for intricate detail and shading. It gained immense popularity during the 17th and 18th centuries for creating elaborate wall panels, upholstery, and decorative screens.

Authentic period pieces were typically crafted using hand-spun wool and silk yarns stitched onto a tightly woven linen or hemp canvas foundation. Natural dyes derived from plants, insects, and minerals provided the rich, muted palette characteristic of the era.

Authenticity is determined by examining the consistency of the hand-spun yarn, the types of natural dyes used, the weave density of the backing canvas, and signs of age-appropriate wear and oxidisation. Subject matter often reflects popular pastoral or maritime scenes inspired by contemporary master painters.

An antique textile panel can be mounted on a stretched wooden frame or hung from a period-appropriate brass rod as a focal point in a study, living room, or hallway. It adds texture, warmth, and historical depth when contrasted against neutral modern walls.

Historic textiles should be displayed away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and protected from high humidity and fluctuating temperatures. Professional conservation framing using UV-filtering glass and archival backing materials ensures long-term preservation.
