Attractive Antique Victorian Rosewood Sewing Table / Work Box

19th century
For Sale by Abacus Antiques
Description

A lovely rosewood sewing table. We date this table to the mid 19th century.

The table sits on two very ornate turned legs with carved bases, these sit above a solid base on four castors recessed within ornately carved feet.

The table has an octagonal top with lovely moulded edge at the base of the table skirting and is fitted with a drawer over a generous pull out basket. The basket has just been restored to a very high standard. The provided key locks drawer and basket at the same time.

The table has a height of 30.5’’ (77cm), a width of 29’’ (74cm) and a depth of 18’’ (46cm).

This lovely sewing table remains in a good solid condition with a very small repair to the table top. There are some minor marks around the feet from past use.

This remains a very stylish and elegant antique sewing table. It will continue to provide good service for many years to come.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian rosewood sewing table, also known as a workbox or needlework table, is a specialised piece of 19th-century occasional furniture designed to store sewing materials, thread, and textile projects. Popular throughout the 19th century, these tables typically feature a hinged lid or upper drawer paired with a fabric-lined pleated basket underneath.

These tables were predominantly crafted from high-grade hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut, often featuring rich veneers. The lower storage well was constructed from pleated silk, damask, or cotton stretched over a wooden frame, supported by turned timber pedestals and carved legs.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature hand-cut joinery, original brass hardware or locks, and natural age-related patination on the timber. Look for a drop-down or pleated fabric storage bag underneath the main surface and carved turned columns characteristic of mid-to-late Victorian craftsmanship.

A rosewood work table functions exceptionally well as an occasional side table beside an armchair or sofa. It can also serve as an accent piece in an entryway or living room, providing subtle storage for small modern everyday items while adding historical character.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent veneer cracking or fading. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the wood grain, ensuring the fabric well is kept free from moisture.
