This charming PAIR OF VICTORIAN STAFFORDSHIRE FIGURES, modelled as a YOUNG COUPLE standing beside their seated RED & WHITE DOGS, date from circa 1860.

The young Lady has a TAMBOURINE beneath her arm and the Young Gentleman is holding a DRUM.

The condition is good with minor paint loss. There is no restoration.

Height: 7.5 inches (19 cm)

Victorian Staffordshire figures are earthenware ornaments produced in Staffordshire, England, throughout the nineteenth century. Designed primarily for working-class and middle-class homes, these press-moulded figures depicted historical personalities, folk figures, musicians, animals, and narrative scenes.

These figures were created using clay pressed into multi-part plaster moulds before being fired. They were subsequently decorated with lead glazes, cobalt oxides, and enamels applied over or under the glaze, often featuring flat, minimally decorated backs intended to rest flush against walls or chimneys.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit a small air release hole in the ceramic body, fine glaze crazing, and evidence of wear on the underside. Original figures feature flatbacks with sparse painting on the reverse and hand-applied enamel details that show subtle variance from machine-made reproductions.
