Shark Vertebrae Walking Stick, Horn Handle, C1860

19th century
For Sale by Curious Antiques
Description

Fine 19th century shark vertebrae walking stick,c1860. I have owned several of these over the years but this is by far the best example. The vertebrae are huge and clearly come from a very large specimen. It is finished with a lovely polished horn handle. There are around 68 vertebrae arranged in graduated form ,ranging from 3.5cm diameter to 2 cm. Overall condition is good in line with age and use. All vertebrae are complete and in perfect order except the very last one closest to the tip of the stick which has a small loss to one side. The handle has taken on great colour following years of handling and use. Please refer to the detailed photographs and feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like to view the item.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A shark vertebrae walking stick is a decorative cane crafted during the nineteenth century, often by sailors or maritime artisans, using dried shark vertebrae stacked over a central metal support rod.

These canes were constructed by cleaning and bleaching shark vertebrae before threading them onto an iron or steel rod, completed with a handle carved from horn, bone, or wood.

Authentic period examples exhibit natural bone grain variations, gradual discolouration from age, hand-carved horn or bone handles, and a central forged metal core.

Display the stick upright in a dedicated umbrella stand, place it within a glazed collectors cabinet, or display it horizontally on a bookshelf beside historical curiosities.

Maintain the cane in a climate-controlled room away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent cracking, dusting gently with a dry soft cloth.
