FAQs

A bureau plat is a flat-topped writing desk introduced in 17th-century France, featuring a wide writing surface, apron drawers, and decorative cast bronze or brass mounts.

Craftspeople traditionally used high-grade timber veneers such as walnut, rosewood, and kingwood for marquetry inlays, complemented by cast ormolu or gilt-bronze mounts.

Key indicators include hand-cut dovetailed drawer construction, heavy mercury-gilded ormolu hardware, detailed veneer inlays, and natural wear patterns across the timber.

Position the piece as a focal point in a home office or formal reception room, pairing it with neutral walls and subtle lighting to highlight the woodwork.

Keep the table away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent veneer lifting, dust with a dry microfibre cloth, and care for ormolu mounts without abrasive chemical cleaners.
