Gothic Revival English Church Stained Glass Window

Description

This stunning Gothic Revival panel is from the top section of a church stained glass window - beautiful and bright, the lead forming the outline of the image with a mixture of pot metal glass with rich ruby reds and cobalt blues, depicting church buildings amongst green foliage, and golden scrolls. There are some beautiful painted sections amongst the design, notably the leaf decoration, and the representation of the stone carving adorning the church building.

The panel stands 72cm high, 55cm across the base and 34cm across the middle section. It's in good condition and has remained untouched since it was removed from the church so would probably need the lead looking at if you were hoping to fit it as an actual external window as some of the leading is understandably fragile.

Overall, it's a fantastic looking piece, with a few small barely noticeable cracks namely two in the glass of the green foliage and one in a side panel ( please see photographs ), but this really doesn't detract from it at all, as I hope you can see from the images.

Gothic Revival stained glass from the nineteenth century draws design inspiration from medieval ecclesiastical architecture, featuring pointed lancet arches, heraldic motifs, crocketed spires, and rich foliate painting. Craftspeople replicated medieval techniques by using hand-blown pot-metal glass joined with lead cames and detailed with vitreous paint.

Stained glass windows were constructed using individual pieces of coloured pot-metal or flashed glass cut to shape and bound together by flexible H-shaped lead strips called cames. Details such as facial features, drapery, and architectural lines were applied by hand using metallic oxide vitreous paint fired directly onto the glass surface.

Authentic antique church glass exhibits variation in glass thickness, micro-bubbles (slump lines or seeds), and slight irregularities from hand-blowing processes. The lead cames typically show age-appropriate oxidisation and minor surface patination, alongside hand-soldered joints and kiln-fired vitreous enamel paint rather than surface-printed inks.

Antique stained glass panels are frequently suspended in front of existing double-glazed windows to catch ambient sunlight without altering structural frames. Alternatively, interior designers set panels into custom lightbox frames, display them as free-standing decorative screens, or insert them into internal doors and room dividers to diffuse light.

Stained glass should be cleaned gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush or a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water. Chemical cleaners, ammonia, and abrasive scrubbing pads must be avoided as they can strip delicate vitreous paint finishes or weaken historic lead joinery.
