Pair Regency Papier Mache Letter Stands

Description

This elegant PAIR OF REGENCY PAPIER MACHE LETTER STANDS date from circa 1830.

They are beautifully shaped and finely painted with English Garden Flowers - the height of Regency sophistication.

The Stands are in good condition with one being virtually unblemished. The other has lost the interior base panel which connects back to front. This is only visible when taking a 'bird's eye' view from the top. There is also a sliver of Papier Mache off the bottom of one of the front feet.

The STANDS are in good original condition with no repairs.

Regency papier-mache ware refers to household and desk accessories produced during the early nineteenth century using pressed paper pulp coated in dark lacquers, often adorned with hand-painted florals and gold leaf.

Layers of paper sheets or pulp were soaked in glue, compressed under heavy heat into moulds, oiled, baked, and finished with multiple coats of dark varnish before craftsmen added hand-painted lacquer details.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural fine surface craquelure, weighted density, hand-painted brushwork under lacquer layers, and wear along base edges rather than uniform modern printed surfaces.
