This large and most impressive beautifully turned Italian Serpentine marble vase was made in Italy, circa 1870 and would have been produced in this most wonderful figured and coloured local stone to attract and be purchased by Victorian travellers on what was referred to as the Grand Tour which incorporated travelling the continent visiting great cities and studying their art and architecture. This type of item was intended as a memento to the wealthy travellers of this time.This marvellous vase has a ring turned slender neck with a flared rim. The centre is baluster shaped and below there is a narrow stem with a large stepped foot. The inside of this vase is very well hollowed. The vase has been turned in two halves to achieve this, a real sign of quality. You can only appreciate this detail by looking down the neck with a bright light.
