Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Fine shrinkage checks across the veneer: natural timber movement over many decades.
Hand-cut floral marquetry inlays: traditional French cabinet-making methods.
Cast brass sabots on the feet: typical early twentieth-century revival metalwork.
Gentle rubbing along the shaped rim: honest handling wear.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This French Louis XV Revival occasional table from 1920 is fashioned from kingwood and marquetry veneer in warm brown tones, enhanced by cast brass sabots on the cabriole legs. The circular top displays quartered panels inlaid with delicate floral marquetry decoration, complemented by a serpentine apron. The piece measures 55 cm high, 76 cm wide, and 76 cm deep. Positioned at the end of a sofa in a living room or sitting area, the table provides a convenient surface for lamps, books, or decorative objects. The compact proportions make it suitable for smaller spaces while maintaining an elegant presence in the interior.

FAQs

Louis XV style tables are characterised by asymmetrical curves, elegant cabriole legs, and ornate surface decoration such as floral marquetry and gilt-bronze mounts. Emerging in 18th-century France, these pieces favoured intimacy, comfort, and fluid organic lines over rigid formality.

Craftsmen used exotic hardwoods such as kingwood, tulipwood, and rosewood for veneers, creating intricate floral or geometric marquetry patterns. Frameworks were typically constructed from oak or pine, finished with cast brass or bronze sabots on the feet.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut wood veneers, subtle variations in grain texture, and signs of hand-sawing on underside joinery. Look for natural patination on brass mounts and hand-fitted dovetail joints rather than modern uniform fixings.

Position the table beside a tailored modern armchair or in a sunlit corner to contrast modern upholstery with antique wood grain. Keep tabletop styling minimal, using a single glass vase or bronze sculpture to highlight the inlaid wood patterns.

Keep the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer warping or fading. Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish occasionally, avoiding spray polish containing silicone.
