These two early twentieth century desk inkstands date from the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, made by Zimmermann of Hanau. The first piece consists of black and gold veined marble with a built-in pen groove, a central inkwell housing a liner, and a vertical back plaque. The second piece is formed from silver-toned metal featuring raised relief patterns, scrolling decoration, side apertures, and a hinged lid above its glass liner. Practical dimensions measure 6 cm high, 25.5 cm wide, and 13.5 cm deep for the larger marble stand. Both items find a natural place today on an office desk or library writing table within a gentleman's study setup.

Art Nouveau inkstands feature organic, flowing curves and stylized plant motifs, whereas Art Deco examples present geometric lines, bold symmetry, and structured forms popularised during the 1920s.

Manufacturers frequently constructed inkstands using cast pewter, bronze, brass, and carved marble, often incorporating glass or ceramic insert pots to hold liquid ink.

Authenticity can be determined by evaluating makers marks, casting stamps, era-appropriate materials, natural surface patination, and wear consistent with historic ink usage.

These decorative objects serve as accent pieces on contemporary office desks, bookshelves, or console tables, adding historic texture and visual interest to a workspace.

Pewter should be dusted with a soft microfibre cloth and cleaned gently with warm water, while marble requires pH-neutral cleaners to avoid dulling or etching the polished stone surface.
