This Edwardian occasional table comes from around 1900 and exemplifies English Country House style. The piece has a square top made from dark brown rosewood, accented with boxwood stringing along the outer edges and detailed floral marquetry inlay on the central divider. Four upright square legs support the upper surface and the lower divided shelf, terminating in small brass castors at the floor. Fine turnings embellish the upper sections of the posts, while satinwood inlay highlights the central upright panels of the magazine rack section. The timber shows a polished grain finish across all surfaces. Measuring 66 cm high, 51 cm wide, and 51 cm deep, the table provides a compact surface for everyday use. Placed at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair in a living room, it offers a convenient spot for lamps, books, or decorative items, alongside lower storage for magazines and periodicals.

Edwardian occasional tables, produced between 1901 and 1910, are characterised by lighter, delicate forms inspired by 18th-century Sheraton and Hepplewhite designs, frequently incorporating fine timber inlays.

Cabinetmakers predominantly utilised rich hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, and satinwood, decorated with delicate boxwood stringing and floral marquetry.

Authentic pieces exhibit precise hand-cut inlay work, square tapered legs, brass castors, and construction consistent with early 20th-century joinery techniques.

Place the table alongside a sofa or armchair, allowing its dark timber finish and intricate inlay to provide visual weight and historical context against contemporary upholstery.

Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement, dust regularly with a soft cloth, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly.
