This rare salon centre table dates from 1900 in the Viennese bentwood style. The piece has a polished mahogany veneered top and a beech stained mahogany undercarriage in a dark brown timber colour. Details include steam-bent scroll legs, a shaped molded top edge, and a turned central finial stretcher. The table measures 76.2 cm high, 32.5 cm wide, and 62.2 cm deep. In a contemporary interior, the table suits placement as a striking centrepiece in a foyer or hallway, or as a lamp table in a reception room. The compact proportions allow it to fit comfortably in smaller seating areas while offering a distinctive silhouette.

Pioneered by Michael Thonet in the mid-19th century, bentwood furniture utilised steam to bend solid beechwood into fluid, curvilinear shapes. These centre tables became prominent in European salons and cafes throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Traditional bentwood tables were predominantly crafted from steam-bent beechwood, which provided the necessary flexibility and strength. They often feature stained walnut or mahogany finishes, held together with discrete wood screws and internal joints.

Authentic pieces often carry paper makers labels or impressed branding stamps beneath the tabletop or along the frame, such as Thonet or Kohn. Additional signs include hand-bent wood scrollwork, original surface patination, and period-correct hardware.

A bentwood centre table functions well as a focal point in an entryway or as an occasional accent table in a living room. Its organic, sculptural lines contrast effectively against clean, contemporary lines and modern neutral palettes.

Keep bentwood items away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent the timber from warping or splitting. Clean with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the original wood finish.
