Originated primarily in Damascus, 19th-century Syrian woodwork is characterised by dense geometric inlays of nacre (mother-of-pearl) set into native dark walnut. Designs frequently draw upon Islamic architectural elements, incorporating miniature arches, domes, mashrabiya latticework, and star polygons.

Craftsmen constructed these wall brackets using hand-carved solid walnut frames. Shallow recessions were chiselled into the timber, into which individual hand-cut mother-of-pearl tesserae and bone or wire accents were fitted and held in place with natural resin mastic.

Authentic 19th-century examples exhibit micro-variations in the hand-cut shell tesserae, historic timber shrink lines, and natural oxidisation of the walnut.
