This nineteenth-century William IV cellarette takes a grand sarcophagus form rendered in rich warm brown mahogany with striking flame mahogany veneers across the hipped lid and fielded panels. The well-figured timber lid opens to reveal an uninterrupted interior space while the tapering body displays carefully mitred mouldings on all sides, resting securely upon an enclosed plinth base fitted with hidden brass castors. Visible details include a central brass keyhole escutcheon set into the front panel alongside subtle grain variations in the wood and gentle patination acquired over time. Measuring 63 cm high by 83 cm wide and 58 cm deep, the piece offers substantial proportions suitable for various interior settings. Placed in a reception room, library or an empty corner, it serves as a sophisticated display surface or functional storage cabinet that anchors traditional and transitional schemes alike with classical architectural presence.

A sarcophagus cellarette is a freestanding wooden container designed during the 18th and 19th centuries to hold and cool wine bottles, shaped in the tapered form of a classical sarcophagus.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid mahogany or flame mahogany veneers, often lined with lead or tin, and featured cast brass hardware or heavy timber moulding.

Authentic pieces usually feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, natural age-related patination, original lead or zinc interior linings, and classical design motifs characteristic of the 1830s.

A cellarette can be placed beneath a console table, alongside a sideboard, or within a dining room alcove as an accent piece or functional drinks cabinet.

Dust regularly with a soft cloth, apply natural beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, and keep the wood away from direct sunlight and modern central heating sources to prevent drying or cracking.
