This Victorian novelty inkwell takes the form of a reclining King Charles Spaniel, produced in England around 1880. Cast in dark brown bronze, the piece features inset glass eyes, finely textured fur detailing across the body, and a hinged lid mechanism where the dog's head lifts to reveal the interior. The sculpture measures 7 cm high, 12.7 cm wide, and 7.6 cm deep. Placed on an office desk or within a gentleman's library setting, this decorative accessory serves as a functional workspace item. The compact bronze figure combines practical desk utility with Victorian animalier sculpture, offering a tactile writing accessory for traditional interiors.

FAQs

During the nineteenth century, novelty inkwells featuring realistic depictions of animals, such as dogs or horses, became popular desk accessories in European homes.

These pieces were typically cast in bronze using lost-wax or sand-casting techniques, featuring hinged lids and set glass or enamel eyes for detail.

Authentic examples display natural age-related patination, hand-chased surface details, and original hinge mechanisms or glass liner inserts.

Position the inkwell on a dark wood office desk, layered alongside leather stationery or styled within a bookshelf display.

Dust the bronze gently with a soft dry cloth and avoid chemical polish, preserving the natural oxidisation and historical patina.
