This monumental nineteenth-century Tibetan Buddha head sculpture is carved from wood and finished with a gold-coloured original gesso and gilt paint surface. The piece displays characteristic Buddhist iconography, including arched eyebrows, a serene facial expression, and elongated earlobes, alongside visible signs of age such as surface wear, chipping, and exposed white gesso beneath the metallic finish. Measuring 80 cm high by 51 cm wide and 55 cm deep, this large display object is substantial in scale and stands upright on a truncated neck base. Suitable for placement as a statement piece in a gentleman's library, the sculpture provides an architectural focal point when positioned on top of a large sideboard. The neutral metallic gold tone and aged surface texture complement traditional and eclectic interior schemes alike, bringing a sense of historic tranquillity to a room through its sculptural presence and handmade wooden construction.

FAQs

Sculptures of Buddha heads were created for Buddhist monasteries, shrines, and temples across Tibet as devotional objects. They served as visual aids for meditation and veneration, representing enlightenment, tranquility, and spiritual wisdom.

Tibetan artisans traditionally carved sculptures from native softwoods or hardwoods, which were then coated with layers of gesso. The surface was often painted or finished with thin layers of gold leaf to represent divine luminosity.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural age wear, including cracking in the wood grain, shrinkage, and flaking of the gesso or gilding. Carvings from this period display hand-tool marks and traditional iconography, such as elongated earlobes and serene facial expressions.

A large sculptural head functions well as a focal point when placed atop a wooden sideboard, console, or pedestal. Pair it with minimalist decor or dark natural timber to complement the aged gilt texture and sculptural form.

Keep gilded wooden objects away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat sources to prevent wood movement and gesso loss. Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding liquids, damp cloths, or chemical polish.
