FAQs

A book slide, also known as a book rack or trough, is an expandable desktop accessory designed to hold a selection of volumes upright. They gained immense popularity during the Victorian era as home libraries and study spaces expanded amongst the middle and upper classes.

Fine antique book slides were typically crafted from dense, exotic hardwoods such as coromandel, mahogany, or walnut. They were frequently embellished with cast brass mounts, engraved strapwork, ceramic cabochons, or inlaid brass stringing to reflect the ornate aesthetic of the period.

Authentic pieces usually feature period-appropriate joinery, heavy exotic timber construction, hand-cut brass screws, and natural patina consistent with age. The expanding mechanism on antique models often relies on a smooth wooden sliding track underneath rather than modern mechanical hinges.

An antique book slide functions well on an office desk, mantelpiece, or bookshelf to corral a curated selection of hardback books. Its contrasting wood grain and metallic mounts add textural warmth and historical character to contemporary or traditional study spaces.

Coromandel wood should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent fading and maintained in a stable environment with moderate humidity to avoid timber splitting. Occasional application of microcrystalline wax helps nourish the polished wood surface without causing build-up.
