Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Marquetry is the craft of applying small pieces of varied wood veneers to a structure to form decorative patterns, scenes, or designs. Developed in Renaissance Europe, this technique uses differing timber colours, grains, and tones to create pictorial balance and visual depth.

Craftsmen traditional use a combination of native and exotic timbers to achieve contrasting colours. Common choices include walnut, mahogany, satinwood, ebony, sycamore, and maple, each selected for specific grain characteristics or dark and light tones.

Authentic period marquetry typically exhibits subtle inconsistencies in veneer thickness, evidence of hand-cut joints, natural age craquelure, and wood shrinkage. Examining the reverse side often reveals original hand-saw marks and aged backing boards.

Decorative marquetry panels work well as focal points above sideboards, mantelpieces, or in hallway alcoves. Pairing intricate timber work with neutral paint finishes and clean-lined furniture creates a balanced contrast between modern simplicity and traditional craftsmanship.

Keep marquetry items away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity, which can cause veneers to lift or warp. Clean gently with a soft dry microfiber cloth, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to maintain the timber.
