This late nineteenth-century Chinese Qing Dynasty side table takes a barrel or drum-shaped form measuring 52 cm high, 50 cm wide, and 50 cm deep. Produced around 1880 from dark brown hongmu hardwood, the piece displays openwork carved sides in a cross-over pattern featuring a central tied knot boss and small ogee-section shaped feet. The curved exterior surfaces exhibit profuse mother-of-pearl floral inlay, while the top edge incorporates inlaid mother-of-pearl stud decoration alongside an inset circular pink variegated rouge marble top. Positioned in a home today at the end of a sofa, the table functions as a decorative surface supporting lamps or small objects. The dark timber has achieved a rich consistent patination and colour, contrasting with the iridescent white shell motifs and the reddish tones of the stone insert. The structure incorporates hollow curved compartments within its frame, presenting a detailed silhouette suitable for maximalist interior styling.

A Qing Dynasty barrel stool, also referred to as a drum stool or garden seat, is a traditional form of Chinese seating characterised by its rounded, barrel-like silhouette, openwork sides, and studded rim detailing.

These stools were primarily constructed from dense, high-grade hardwoods such as hongmu or zitan, frequently embellished with carved openwork panels, natural mother-of-pearl inlays, or porcelain inserts.

Authentic pieces feature traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery without metal nails, hand-carved decorative motifs, natural wear patterns along touchpoints, and subtle variations in the hand-cut mother-of-pearl inlays.

In modern settings, these versatile items function effectively as occasional side tables alongside low-profile sofas, as statement accent seats in entryways, or positioned within living room alcoves.

Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, avoid placing the object near direct heat sources or in fluctuating humidity, and periodically apply a high-grade beeswax polish to nourish the wood.
