Description

Woven by the talented dyers and weavers of Uzbekistan, this beautiful ikat purse is a gem. Fine workmanship, lovely colours and in excellent condition. Note the fine trimming at the top and the printed textile inside. It must have been cherished through the generations as it has survived in excellent condition, including the tassels. This fine item would make a wonderful decorative wall hanging, and a great gift!

Uzbek silk ikat textiles originate from major oasis cities along the Silk Road, such as Bukhara, Samarkand, and Fergana Valley. The technique, locally known as abrbandi (cloud-binding), involves resist-dyeing warp threads prior to weaving, producing distinct feathered or blurred patterns characteristic of Central Asian craftsmanship.

These pieces were typically crafted using hand-spun silk warp yarns combined with silk or cotton weft threads. Construction involved complex resist-dyeing, narrow-loom hand weaving, and hand-stitched assembly, often embellished with hand-braided cords, metallic thread trims, glass beads, and silk tassels.

Authentic period examples exhibit subtle irregularities from hand-looming, natural dye variations, and hand-sewn lining or seams.
