Butler trays originated in 18th and 19th-century Britain, designed for domestic staff to transport food and drink from the kitchens to the dining rooms or drawing rooms before being placed on a folding stand.

Authentic period trays are typically constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany or oak, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, pegged framing, and sturdy brass hinges designed to allow the sides to fold down flat.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the grain and patination of the wood, the hand-turned or cast brass hardware, hand-cut screw slots, and signs of genuine age-related wear rather than artificial distress.

Placing the folding tray on its stand creates a functional side table or cocktail table, adding warmth and historical texture to contemporary living spaces while offering versatile surface area.

Maintain the wood by applying microcrystalline wax periodically, avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity, and cleaning only with a soft, dry cloth without harsh chemical polishes.
