This Victorian coffee table dates from 1880 in the Arts and Crafts style, manufactured by Gillows of Lancaster with a stamped undercarriage. The piece is constructed from walnut with a dark brown finish and comprises a square top resting upon four splayed, ring-turned legs and a shaped apron. Visible details include ring mouldings on the legs and ornate carving along the lower frieze, presenting an English Country House aesthetic. The table stands 62 cm high, 72 cm wide, and 72 cm deep. In a modern home, this table suits placement in a living room or study as a central coffee table or display surface. The sturdy wooden construction and compact proportions make it practical for daily use alongside seating arrangements in both traditional and transitional interior schemes.

Gillows of Lancaster was a prominent English cabinetmaking firm established in 1730 by Robert Gillow. Renowned for joinery excellence, timber selection, and proportion, the firm supplied fine furniture to British country houses throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Victorian low and occasional tables were typically constructed from solid timbers such as walnut, mahogany, and rosewood. Construction relied on mortise and tenon joinery, hand-turned legs, and hand-applied beeswax or French polish finishes.

Authentic pieces often feature a stamped maker mark such as GILLOWS, GILLOWS & CO, or a stamped serial number on the underside or drawer edges. Precision hand-craftsmanship, high-grade wood selection, and signature leg profiles further distinguish genuine production.

A dark walnut low table adds balance when paired alongside neutral tailored sofas or textured linen upholstery. Dress the top surface sparingly with architectural books, ceramic vessels, or metal trays to harmonise traditional timber tones with modern interior schemes.

Dust the timber surface regularly using a soft, dry lint-free cloth, and apply a natural beeswax polish annually to preserve the finish. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, radiators, and liquid moisture, using coasters to prevent ring marks.
