Qianlong Chinese Famille Rose Porcelain Mug

Description

This is an 18th Century Chinese porcelain mug dating from the rule of Emperor Qianlong (1736-1795). It is hand painted with enamels in the famille rose palette.

The body of the mug is painted with a central reserve depicting two groups of figures. There are four small circular reserves painted with flowers, and another reserve around the handle painted with birds amongst foliage. The reserves have red line borders. The handle is of a simple loop form.

There is a chip to the rim which has created two horizontal cracks. There is a crack to the handle, which has had some restoration. There is wear and fading to quite a lot of the enamel, particularly to the eyes of the figures, the red borders and anything picked out in grey. There are only traces of gilded borders.

Famille Rose refers to Chinese porcelain decorated with opaque pink enamels containing gold, introduced during the 18th century in the Qing dynasty. These pieces were frequently produced specifically for export to Western markets, featuring European functional shapes combined with traditional Chinese iconography.

These items were crafted from high-fired kaolin clay (porcelain) and decorated using overglaze enamel painting. The body was fired at high temperatures first, followed by meticulous hand-painting with mineral-based enamels and a secondary lower-temperature firing to set the colours.
