Masons ironstone was patented by Charles James Mason in 1813 in Staffordshire, England. It was engineered as a durable, heavy-duty alternative to imported porcelain, frequently decorated with Oriental and Chinoiserie patterns using transfer printing.

Ironstone china is crafted from a mixture of clay, flint, feldspar, and slag. Despite the name, it contains no actual iron; the moniker refers to its weight, strength, and durability compared to traditional earthenware.

Authentic pieces generally feature stamped or impressed makers marks on the underside, such as the crown and banner logo. They are heavier than porcelain, exhibit underglaze transfer printing, and may show light age-related glaze crazing.

Blue and white transferware is commonly displayed on plate stands, mounted on gallery walls, or arranged inside glazed dressers. Incorporating ceramic plates into modern kitchen islands or sideboards adds historical pattern and contrast.
