This Edwardian occasional table stands on square tapering supports with spade feet, joined by an X-frame stretcher with a central fluted turned finial. The golden brown satinwood construction displays a well-figured grain, complemented by kingwood crossbanding and contrasting boxwood and ebony stringing around the shaped octagonal top with alternate serpentine edges. Minor scratches appear on the tabletop alongside overall solid construction and good veneers. The piece measures 69 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 61 cm deep. Placed at the end of a sofa or in a reception room, it provides a stable surface for lamps, books, or decorative objects within an English country house interior.

Edwardian satinwood furniture is noted for its lightweight proportions, geometric forms, and delicate timber grain. Cabinetmakers of the early 20th century frequently incorporated satinwood veneers, crossbanded borders, and neoclassical motifs as a movement away from heavy Victorian aesthetics.

Occasional tables from the Edwardian period were primarily constructed using native and imported hardwoods, with satinwood, mahogany, and rosewood being prominent choices. These pieces often feature veneered tops, stringing inlays, and carved or turned stretchers for added stability.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers where present, traditional hand-applied French polish finishes, and fine stringing or marquetry. The timber displays a characteristic warm golden hue with natural grain variations rather than uniform synthetic colouration.

An Edwardian occasional table functions effectively as an accent piece alongside contemporary upholstered seating. Positioned at the end of a sofa or in an alcove, it provides a surface for lighting, literature, or decorative glassware while adding warmth through its timber tone.

Maintain the surface by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year along the grain. Keep the table away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage, veneer lifting, or colour fading.
