This George III mahogany and brass bound plate bucket originates from the eighteenth century. The Georgian piece employs dark brown mahogany with a polished interior and a distinct brass upper rim, complete with a movable brass swing handle, visible fixing screws on the metalwork, and an open side slot. Vertical cutout slats with arched tops form the cylindrical body, standing 49 cm high, 55 cm high with the handle up, and 32 cm in diameter. Positioned in an English Country House interior scheme, the decorative bucket functions as a practical accessory beside a fireplace hearth for storing or displaying items. The open slot at the front allows plates to be lifted out easily, while the circular base provides a stable platform. This functional antique integrates naturally into traditional living spaces as a fireside receptacle.

During the 18th and early 19th centuries, plate buckets were utilised in grand dining rooms to transport warm dinner plates from lower-level kitchens to the serving area. The open vertical slot enabled footmen to stack and remove plates easily without disturbing the rest of the pile.

These vessels were predominantly crafted from dense mahogany featuring vertical staves or cut-out slats. They were reinforced with polished brass binding bands and fitted with heavy brass swing handles to support the weight of ceramic tableware.

Authentic 18th-century examples display hand-fitted joinery, original brass hand-cut screws, and timber shrinkage or patination consistent with age. Key design hallmarks include a solid circular base, a vertical side cutout, and wear concentrated around the brass handle joints.

In contemporary settings, a Georgian plate bucket functions as a functional vessel for rolled textile throws near a hearth, housing walking sticks in a hallway, or holding magazines beside an armchair. Its rich timber hues and metallic details add historical depth to contemporary schemes.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically to maintain the surface finish. Avoid abrasive metal polishes on the brass fittings to preserve the historical oxidation, and position the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement.
