A Miniature Victorian Windsor Chair

19th century
Description

An absolutely charming example of a late 19th century miniature Windsor chair. This exquisite Victorian armchair has a curved top rail supported by two turned uprights and three spindles, and has a shaped seat supported by turned tapering legs — the front two of which are united by a stretcher. It retains its original paint-stain finish with an abundance of character and the most attractive glowing patination. It is English c1880 to c1900.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A miniature Windsor chair is a scaled-down replica of a traditional stick-back chair, historically created as an apprentice piece, a salesman display sample, or a childs toy during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

These pieces typically feature solid native timbers such as beech, elm, yew, or pine, constructed using traditional wood-turning techniques with spindle backs wedged into a solid timber seat.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-turned spindles, natural wear patterns on touchpoints, original surface varnish or wax patina, and hand-cut joinery rather than modern uniform machine cuts.

Displaying a miniature chair on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or side table alongside contemporary art books adds architectural scale and historical texture to a modern interior.

Keep the item away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent timber splitting, dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying clear beeswax sparingly.
