FAQs

Scrubbed top tables were utilitarian pieces typically found in 19th-century country kitchens or sculleries, where the wooden tabletop was regularly scrubbed with soap, water, and sand to maintain cleanliness, resulting in a pale, bare wood finish.

These tables were predominantly constructed using softwoods like pine or pitch pine, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, mortise and tenon leg joinery, and turned wooden drawer knobs.

Authentic examples display natural wear along the edges, historic timber shrinkage, original drawer construction methods, and a distinct pale patina on the scrubbed top where decades of cleaning dissolved the finish.

A scrubbed top table introduces texture to modern kitchens or dining spaces, serving as a central dining table paired with modern chairs or as a generous kitchen island unit.

Clean the top using a mild soap solution and a soft cloth, wiping along the wood grain and avoiding harsh chemicals or excess water to preserve the untreated timber patina.
