Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century plant and display stands were utilitarian and decorative tables created to elevate houseplants, sculptures, or oil lamps. Typically made from hardwoods like oak, mahogany, or walnut, they featured slender legs, stable lower stretchers, and compact tops suitable for narrow Victorian interiors.

These stands were predominantly crafted using solid oak joined with traditional mortise and tenon joints. Construction details often include hand-shaped aprons, turned upright supports, and low box stretchers to provide structural rigidity while maintaining a light visual profile.

Authentic pieces exhibit uneven wear on lower stretchers and feet, natural oxidisation of the timber around joinery, and evidence of hand-cut joints or pegged construction. The surface patina should reflect gradual age rather than a uniform modern finish.

A pair of tall oak stands works effectively when used symmetrically to frame a doorway, window alcove, or fireplace. They can support potted greenery, ceramic vases, or small sculptures to introduce vertical height and warm timber tones to a room.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry, soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year to preserve the patina. Keep timber furniture away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent shrinking, warping, or cracking.
