This Victorian mahogany torchere functions as a display stand for a bust or plant. The timber displays a dark brown finish with rich grain variations. A circular dished top surmounts a slender, fluted column stem with turned wood detailing at the joints, above a carved tripod base formed of feathered legs resting on claw feet. Measuring 132 cm high, 36 cm wide, and 36 cm deep, the stand has a compact footprint suited for an empty corner in a hallway, living room, or study. It provides an elevated platform to display sculptural objects or botanical arrangements while occupying minimal floor space in a traditional or period interior.

Originating in France during the seventeenth century, a torchere was created as a tall, freestanding stand designed to elevate candelabras, oil lamps, or wax candles, improving light distribution across a room.

Victorian torcheres were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as solid mahogany, walnut, or oak, often featuring hand-carved tripod bases, turned turnings, and fluted central columns.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples feature hand-turned columns, pegged or dovetail jointing at the tripod base, natural wood grain variations, and subtle signs of wear on the upper surface where lamps or vases rested.

Place a torchere in an empty corner, window bay, or beside a sideboard to introduce vertical height. Use it to display a ceramic planter, a bronze sculpture, or a modern table lamp.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually along the direction of the grain. Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent cracking.
